“Love Will be Enough”, Understanding the Impact of Child Trauma on the Family
featuring Jayne Schooler, well known family educator and author

Assessing, Preparing and Supporting Adoptive Parents for the Journey Ahead.

Adoptive parents many times truly believe that love will be enough to overcome a child’s traumatized past. Yet many of these parents are broadsided by shattered assumptions. It isn’t what they thought it would be. They don’t feel like they thought they would. The child isn’t responding like they counted on.

Much work must be done in assessing, preparing and supporting parents for the challenge task of caring for traumatized children.

During this interactive workshop participants will:

  • comprehend the definition of Trauma-Informed Assessment and Preparation
  • gain a better understanding of how to narrow the gap between parental expectations of the adoption journey and the reality experienced.
  • identify ten common parental expectations and gain strategies in which to engage prospective adoptive parents in discussion and self evaluation.
  • understand a working definition of the traumatized child to use with parents and know resources and training materials to share with them.
  • understand secondary trauma, identify early symptoms within an adoptive family and have tools and resources for families to use in discussion and self-evaluation.
